O-Bar-O Cabins

Herb Sayers and Natalie New are the new owners of O-Bar-O Cabin— the riverside cabin community out on County Road 240.

Sustainability: On the energy side, they have trained their staff to reduce consumption and even set up systems of communication that help staff & guests determine correct protocol, especially at night in concert with dark sky practices.

Cabin towels & sheets are washed upon guest request, rather than daily (saves water, too) and they take their delicate laundry to Kelly’s Green Dry Cleaning - this operation works to keep the river clean, as well as their cabin decorative pillow cases. They continue to save water but putting high efficiency toilets in every cabin.

O-Bar-O provides a picnic basket for their guests, complete with wooden utensils and palm leaf plates, so they are not contributing to the plastic waste problem at our local landfill (wood and palm are renewables). They also encourage their guests to recycle everything they can, even providing compostable bags for their use and reusable coffee filters in all cabins. All of the lotions, shampoo and other liquids are in refillable bottles, and Natalie personally takes the old sheets and towels to the local animal shelters that they support among her myriad of other errands while she is in town (she only makes one trip per week to reduce her emissions).

Timber Age

Building Innovators
4CORE Green Business Certified - GOLD

Timber Age uses a revolutionary business model and design to create foam-free, insulated structural panels for energy efficient homes and buildings. First of all, the factory is located as close to the source of wood as possible, which are trees felled for wildfire mitigation. For most Timber Age projects, the wood goes from forest to factory and into a home in less than 100 miles.

In addition, Timber Age sole-sources the transport of logs to the Timber Age sawmill where as much of each log possible is turned into boards for use in their panels. Their new manufacturing facility, currently being renovated in Mancos, is set up to construct the three-layer, cross-laminated timber (CLT), vacuum laminated panels one after another. These panels will serve as building blocks for panelized modular homes in the region - geared to the affordable housing sector - which will require very little, if any, energy to heat and cool because of their highly-efficient design based around Passivehaus principles. In addition to the intrinsic efficiency of the operation, the facility is set up with a contraption called a “briquetter” that is designed to reclaim the sawdust from the floor for use in a boiler which will heat the factory in the winter.

Ice Cream

4CORE Green Business Certified - Platinum

The owner of this Main Avenue ice cream destination, Katie Burford, has been seeking out ways to reduce impact from the get-go, and customers can tell. In addition to having an energy conservation plan and reducing waste in every way
she can think of, she offers discounts for folks who bring their own shake cups, spoons and bowls. She delivers with an electric vehicle, and works with the only natural foods
distributor in the state - a co-op that supports independent dairy farmers. Also, notably, there is a trio of choices for spoons: metal/reusable, compostable fiber
or bamboo. So when faced with a gaggle of littles wanting a cool treat, this may be the sustainable option.

Sarvaa Organics

Food - Super Foods

Sarvaa Organics formulates small batch, always organic artisan superfood blends, Spagyric CBD, and probiotic powders designed to support the planet by supporting your health.

Sustainability: In addition to a commitment to organic agriculture and ingredients, Sarvaa Organics donates a portion of every purchase to fight climate change and deforestation by planting seedlings of native tree species and paying daily wages of local people in areas hit by extreme poverty and deforestation. Over 48,000 trees have been planted so far!

They reuse or recycle so much, that Sarvaa Organics now only generates one large bag of trash per month! Plus, they even spend the extra money to purchase the absolute highest quality virgin organic coconut oil in glass jars instead of plastic tubs, which are then donated to a local non-profit organization who washes and reuses them in clever ways as part of their mission. Food waste is now down to around one quart container per month. Sarvaa has also retrofitted their facility with all LED lighting in 2019. And, they use non-toxic cleaning products in their facility.

Unitarian Universalist Fellowship

Fellowship - Unitarian

A dedicated group of congregants from Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Durango make up the Environmental Justice Team(EJT), have been engaged for several years in finding opportunities for their beloved church to do better for the Earth. Before signing up, the church had already installed electric vehicle chargers and renewable energy in the form of solar. Years ago they worked with 4CORE to get an energy audit of their three buildings, which resulted in a number of climate related remediation efforts. The team also made sure the building had all LED lighting and exit signs, aerators on all of the faucets and efficient irrigation equipment for water savings, and amenities (i.e. a bike rack) to encourage alternative transportation - this also minimizes vehicle traffic and reduces neighborhood noise.

The church and the EJT continue to consider and put specific policies in place that support sustainability in a variety of ways, including all new appliance purchases must be ENERGY Star rated; all staff can work from home if needed; during church-sponsored meals there are plant-based options; any new construction must be maximally environmentally sensitive.   They continue to educate the congregation on ways congregants can reduce their carbon footprints.
